The Ādaži district (Ādažu novads) is located in the center of Latvia north of the capital Riga in the historical Vidzeme region .

geography

The district is rich in lakes and forest areas. In the south of the area there is part of the Baltezer (White Lake). The lower reaches of the Gauja run through the district. The lakes Lieluika and Mazuika were declared special protected areas in 1999, as they contain rare plant species. The landscape worth protecting has been part of the Natura 2000 network since 2004 .

The “Polygon of Ādaži” ( Ādažu poligons ), one of the largest military bases in the Baltic States, extends to the north-east of the district .

history

The district was established in 2006 when the eleven parishes ( pagasts ) Alderi, Atari, Āņi, Baltezers, Birznieki, Divezeri, Eimuri, Iļķene, Garkalne, Kadaga and Stapriņi and the administrative center Ādaži in the district ( novads ) Ādaži were dissolved.

population

In 2018 the Ādaži district had 11,822 inhabitants. Due to the proximity to the capital Riga, new housing estates developed in most of the localities of the district. As a result, the district's population has grown steadily since it was founded.
