The Balvi district (Balvu novads) is located in eastern Latvia in the historic Latgale region .
geography
In the district there is Lake Balvi , which flows into the Balupe River. The area is sparsely populated and rich in forests and swamps.
population
The district consists of ten municipalities (pagasts) Balvi (Land), Bērzkalne, Bērzpils, Briežuciems, Krišjāņi, Kubuļi, Lazduleja, Tilža, Vectilža, Vīksnai and the administrative center Balvi . 15,597 inhabitants (2010) live in the Balvi district.
