Border between Latvia and Lithuania
The Latvian-Lithuanian border is the state border between Latvia and Lithuania. The length of the national border is 588.1 km plus 22.2 km of the sea border.
The border begins at the triangle with Belarus north of the Drūkšiai Lake and extends to the Baltic coast, where it ends between Palanga (Lithuania, German Polangen ) and Rucava (Latvia, German Rutzau ). The sovereign territories extend 22.2 km west into the Baltic Sea . The border runs 30 km along the river Šventoji ( German Heiligenaa ).
history
The demarcation dates from 1918, when both states declared their independence. There were some disputes about the exact location of the border, but after a few years these were settled in the Lithuanian-Latvian Border Treaty of March 30, 1921. These disputes concerned places where the borders of the old Russian province did not correspond to the language distribution and in connection with railway lines and the question of the sea access of Lithuania in the area of the port city of Polangen .
With its incorporation into the Soviet Union, the border became an internal border between the Soviet republics. The international border was restored in 1991 with the independence of both states. After lengthy negotiations, in July 1999 the border between the territorial waters was established as a straight line between 56 ° 4 ′ 8.9 ″ N , 21 ° 3 ′ 51.5 ″ E and 56 ° 2 ′ 43.5 ″ N , 20 ° 42 ′ 35 ″ O set.
Borderline
Between 1991 and 2007 there were border controls between the countries, which were abandoned after the two countries joined the Schengen Agreement in December 2007 , which made it possible to cross the border without restriction.
An uncontrolled transition between the two countries is possible at every accessible point. There are markings by border posts or signs on the roadside at greater intervals. Remains of border fortifications can only be seen in a few places.
The list documents a past situation, but marks transitions that were important for international traffic in terms of traffic. Traffic restrictions are only due to general traffic regulations. In addition, border locations are indicated that are conspicuous.

Remarks
- ↑ For people who are not covered by the Schengen Agreement , there are visa and residence regulations that restrict cross-border traffic. In this case, crossing the border would be illegal.
- ↑ The hiking trail leads through the dunes and along the beach. On the beach there is still a massive Lithuanian concrete boundary stone from the 1930s, now without any marking or lettering. In addition, the current border posts "0001" for Latvia and Lithuania. The border passage is possible as a beach hike.
-
↑ At the crossing, the European cycle path R1 also passes and the Latvian cycle route LV1 changes into the Lithuanian route LT5.

- ↑ The river Lukne forms the border. The passage on the bridge can be reached via side streets.
- ↑ Old concrete boundary stone without inscription on the Latvian side. The state border runs through the Sedviņi cemetery about 135 m northeast of the road border passage.

↑ According to the Latvian Embassy in Lithuania, the State Border Guard and the municipality of Dunika, the opening of this border crossing would be important for around 30 families living on the Latvian side. The biggest problem was the Lithuanian children who lived in Latvia and attended high school in Lithuania, but were then forced to cross the border illegally. The distance between the populated areas of the two countries is 3 km. The Laņķinu - Lankatu crossing, 12 km away, was only in operation on weekends and the Plūdoņi - Skuodas crossing from Luknes was a detour of 48 km. This prompted both countries to set up this transition. By joining the EU, the regulation became superfluous.

- ↑ At the beginning of the 1990s, rail traffic was stopped. In the immediate area around the bridge over the Apšė / Apše, there were a number of changes to the borderline that had existed since 1927 through the swap of territories. The border was thus adapted to the regulated course of the Latvian Losis .
- ↑ Vehicle traffic up to 3.5 t on the border bridge over the Losis / Lūšis .
- ^ Before the Second World War, official border crossing via the barrage of the river lv: Losis . The boundary line in the dammed lake was changed after the war. In 2008 the crossing was blocked by a gate, but it is again accessible on bad roads. No vehicle traffic possible.
-
↑ Large boulder on the Lithuanian side. In the border area there is also an old hewn natural stone with an inscription, which is possibly of Curian origin. The top line seem K..rlen and the second line Griežer to stand. Grieže or Grieze is the name of the village that is divided by the border. Similar stones have been found in western Courland as well as in other places in southern Latvia. Courland is now a Latvian region. It is most likely a boundary stone between two 18th century mansions. Similar stones are the Russian werst marks. Since this street has never been a main street, it is very unlikely that it is such a distance marker. There were manors in Griežė (LT) and Grieze (LV). The Griežė Estate in Lithuania was in operation until the Second World War. One of the landowners was Baron Keyserling von Griežė. The country estate on the Latvian side is operated again. The Latvian mansion is located near the village of Kalni.

- ↑ The border runs through the middle of the bed of the longest border river between Latvia and Lithuania. However, the bridge belongs entirely to Latvia. Thus about 37 m² of Lithuania are bridged by Latvia.
- ↑ border bridge over the river Vadakstis / Vadakste
- ↑ The railway connection is out of order. Passenger traffic was discontinued on October 22, 2010, later also freight traffic. The tracks were dismantled on the Latvian side. On the Lithuanian side there is an old boundary stone with updated labeling.
- ↑ Unpaved road over the dam that dams the Vadakste river to Vadakstesee. At 3.3 km, it is the longest Latvian-Lithuanian border lake. The boundary does not run along the center line, but over seven points that do not correspond to any of the boundary marking positions (boundary posts). On this lake there are five Latvian border markers on the north shore of the lake while there are eleven on the Lithuanian south shore.
- ↑ The Lithuanian road 1001 runs about 1.2 km directly parallel to the Latvian border. The Latvian estate Brīvnieki , which is located right on the border - now abandoned - had a private border crossing to the Lithuanian road.
- ↑ In the meantime hardly passable dirt road without meaning for the traffic. Closed to trucks
- ↑ An almost classic , previously important border crossing with a number of preserved boundary stones and buildings. The insignia on the landmarks have been removed, probably stolen. The border runs diagonally across the village street at an acute angle.
- ↑ In the meantime hardly used forest path. An old landmark has been preserved
- ↑ This border passage over a wobbly wooden walkway to the other side of the stream was of no importance for international traffic. Its current course appears puzzling. During the Soviet era, the Lithuanian farmer living here built a stable on the territory of the then Latvian SSR without having a permit or registering the building. In 1995, Lithuania acquired the very small property from the Latvian state and the international border was changed. Lithuania has given a 15.5 m² piece of land to Latvia. The acquired Lithuanian territory increased the national territory by a net 484.5 m². In the summer of 2011, the barn burned down because children were playing with the fire. The surrounding area on the Latvian side is the Robeznieku kapi cemetery
- ↑ At the border there are still pre-war boundary stones that have since received current insignia. The terminal buildings were shut down.
- ↑ The dirt road runs 75 m along the Sarkaņi cemetery. The border runs around the Latvian cemetery to the south.
- ↑ The former, now abandoned, Lithuanian border station is only a few meters south of the border. Part of the building was destroyed by vandalism.
- ↑ a b Border crossing that was closed after joining the Schengen Agreement.
- ↑ This former border crossing, known as Ūsiškiai in the pre-war period , was one of the strangest on the entire Latvian-Lithuanian border because it was closed to people leaving Latvia. In the meantime, a heap of gravel on the Latvian side of the road just before the border prevented the passage of vehicles. Nevertheless, there is an EU country and traffic information sign on the Latvian side. The obstacle on the Latvian side is bypassed by the locals or by using tractors and bicycles.
- ↑ This former border crossing served as the entrance to the historic Kamardė homestead, which was protected as a state-protected cultural heritage from April 13, 1992 to May 25, 2015. In the meantime the border passage was blocked with piles of gravel. Locals bypass the barrier.
- ↑ When branching off from "friendship"
- ↑ The border runs right next to the road for 411 meters.
-
↑ Pietų Draugystė is a branch of the “friendship” towards Riga. The "friendship" was established from 1959 to 1964 by the Comecon countries at the time. It connects the Russian oil fields with the European oil refineries . The string crossing the border consists of three oil pipelines and one natural gas pipeline. Immediately at the border, a pipe branches off to the west, runs through Latvia for 6.5 kilometers and then continues through Lithuania.

- ↑ The border bridge over the Memel is about 90 meters long and connects the Latvian village Skaistkalne (850 inhabitants) with the Lithuanian village Germaniškis (430 inhabitants). The border runs in the middle of the river, which is only approx. 50 m wide here.
- ↑ Border post “1117” near Rumbo on the banks of the Memel
- ↑ It is a ramification of “friendship” in the direction of Riga. At this point the line runs under the Memel to the Lithuanian side.
- ↑ The bridge over the Neretiņa / Nereta makes a very dilapidated impression.
- ↑ Before the Second World War, there were still some agricultural goods on the Latvian side for which the border operation was set up.
- ↑ On the embankment there are still two boundary stones, now painted with the current state colors.
-
↑ At the border, the Latvian bicycle route LV3 changes into the Estonian route LT3 .

- ↑ The former border triangle Latvia - Lithuania - Poland lies next to the last Latvian-Lithuanian boundary stone from the pre-war period. The exact position can only be determined from historical maps. On September 17, 1939, the Soviet Union occupied eastern Poland as planned by the German-Soviet border and friendship treaty . In October Lithuania was able to appropriate the formerly Polish Vilnius area. Thus the new triangle also shifted to the south (now LV / LT / BY).
- ↑ The border on the railway area was relocated in 1995 for technical reasons.

But there have been occasions when selected Belarusian citizens took part in joint festivities at the three-country corner.
