description

Grewia asiatica with fruits

Grewia species grow as shrubs or small trees ; some species climb or climb. The mostly alternate, simple, stalked leaves have a smooth, serrated or seldom curved leaf margin; they can be slightly hairy on the top and bottom. Stipules are present.

The flowers are solitary or few together in zymose inflorescences . The hermaphrodite flowers are fivefold. The five free sepals are leathery and mostly colored, so not green. The five free petals are usually shorter than the sepals. Nectar glands can sit on the petals or on the androgynophore . Most of the many (8 to 40 or more) stamens that are not fused together are distributed across the androgynophore, which is very different in length. The two to four carpels are a top permanent ovary adherent, which is located at the upper end of the Androgynophors.

The stone fruits are round to clearly four-lobed (which is also expressed for these species in the name "Cross-berry" or "Four-corner", which is common in South Africa).
