Grgo Martić
Grgo Martić (born January 22, 1822 in Rastovača near Posušje , † August 30, 1905 in Kreševo ) was a Franciscan and writer from Bosnia and Herzegovina .
Life
Grgo Martić was born in Rastovača near Posušje in 1822 in what was then Ottoman Herzegovina . From 1834 he received his school education with the Franciscans in the Bosnian Kreševo and there decided to join the Franciscan order. He stayed in Kreševo until 1838. From 1844 he continued his school education outside of Bosnia in Požega , Zagreb and in Hungary . He was ordained a priest at Christmas 1844. As a chaplain , he was pastoral in Kreševo and Osová for three yearsactive. Then he was parish priest in Sarajevo from 1851 to 1879 .
Martić worked as a writer and translator. He translated works by Homer and Goethe into Croatian . At the time of the Austro-Hungarian occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, he also worked politically and campaigned for the Roman Catholic Croatian population of Bosnia-Herzegovina .
A monument in his honor was placed in the center of Posušje in front of the church. Furthermore, a stone cross from that time (in the village of Rastovača - his place of birth) reminds of his life and work. The years from 1879 to his death in 1905 he spent mainly in the Franciscan monastery of Krešvo. He was portrayed by the Croatian painter Ivan Tišov .
