The single - seat low - wing aircraft with an open cockpit was designed and built as an aerobatic machine. It had a rigid landing gear. The machine was specially developed in 1936 for the 10th anniversary of the Komsomol . The first flight took place on March 7th of that year after just two months of development and production. Initially, the machine was equipped with a 37 kW (50 PS) Walter Mikron (hanging four-cylinder in - line engine ). In 1939 a 59 kW (80 PS) Pobjoy was installed. In the following year, a 48 kW (65 hp) M-23 three-cylinder radial engine was used.
Like the Gribowski G-21 , the G-22 had automatic slats that always moved synchronously thanks to a linkage. Ekaterina Mednikowa set a class world record with the machine on July 3, 1936 with 164.94 km / h.
