Grigoraş Dinicu

Grigoraş Ionică Dinicu , Romanian pronunciation: [ grigoˈraʃ iˈonikə diˈniku ] (born April 3, 1889 in Bucharest , † March 28, 1949 or August 5, 1948 in Bucharest), was a Romanian composer and violinist of Roma descent. He is known for his often performed piece Hora staccato . Jascha Heifetz described him as the best violinist he had ever heard.

Dinicu's father was actually called Ionică Dinu and later called himself Ionică Dinicu . He came from Piteşti and his mother was the daughter of Angheluş Dinicus (around 19th century) and sister of the Romanian musicians Dimitrie A. Dinicu (1868–1936), Gheorghe A. Dinicu (1863–1930) and Nicolae A. Dinicu (1879– 1954), all of which played an important role in Bucharest music around the turn of the century. Dinicu studied violin with Carl Flesch and composition at the conservatory in Bucharest from 1902 to 1906 . He also received a scholarship to the Vienna Music University , but was not allowed to use it because he was a Roma . He never forgot this. From 1906 to 1940 he worked as a violinist in various orchestras , gave concerts on guest tours abroad as a soloist and conductor , but also performed in hotels, restaurants and cafes in Bucharest and Western Europe. Most of his pieces are written for violin and piano, although they were later arranged for other compositions. The works often contain elements of Romanian folk music or gypsy music . The most famous pieces are:

  • Ciocârlia (The Lark) , arranged for violin , composed for the first time by his grandfather Angheluș Dinicu for Nai ( panpipe ),
  • Hora staccato (Hora Staccato) , 1906, arranged for violin and piano by Jascha Heifetz, arranged for orchestra by Pantscho Wladigerows (1899–1978), arranged for coloratura soprano and orchestra by Constantin Bobescus (1899–1992),
