History and etymology
Groß Breese was first mentioned in a document in 1406 as to dem Brese . The name is derived from the Slavic and means something like Birkenort . It was founded as a round village with a church and manor around 500 m southwest of the 21st century town center on the Karthane lowlands.
In a major fire on April 4, 1840, the entire place was destroyed. The fire was favored by the closely spaced houses. The exception was the church, whose tower could no longer be saved either. To prevent another conflagration, the village was rebuilt as a street village within six months. To protect against flooding of the Elbe, the residents moved the place 500 m further north. The wide main street with three (previously four) rows of trees on each side of the street dates from this time. A total of 21 farms of the same size and four farms for Kötter were built . These were raffled by the district administrator. There was also a rectory, a syringe house and a school. In 1878 the established church , a new church.
In 1982 the entire village complex was placed under monument protection. From 1990, new residential buildings were built along the edge of the village. In 1995 a local history association was founded, which opened a local parlor with a village museum.
