The Große Sandspitze in Tyrol is 2770  m above sea level. A. the highest mountain in the Gailtal Alps , a mountain range in the Southern Limestone Alps . It is located in the subgroup of the Lienz Dolomites and is popularly called Sunnspitz .

Tourist development

The first ascent of the Great Sandspitze succeeded Franz Mitterhofer , farmer from Tristach called Kreitmeier on July 2, 1886. It reaches from the Lavanter Steinkar the Daumenschartl and from that on the north side of the mountain to the summit. The normal route of the first climber reaches difficulty level III and was the most difficult route in the first development period of the Lienz Dolomites. The second ascent succeeded the Lienz district school inspector August Kolp and the Lienz master baker and innkeeper Ignaz Linder just three weeks later on July 20, 1886. They reached the Daumenschartl from the Laserz , where they first climbed the Böse Schartl and then bypassed the thumb . On the summit they found a note from Mitterhofers as proof of the climb. A report of this tour was published by Reginald Czermak in the communications of the German and Austrian Alpine Club in 1886.

On the third ascent of the Großer Sandspitze on July 25, 1888, August Kolp climbed with Franz Gassler , Mathias Marcher and Johann Stoll directly over the north ridge from Daumenschartl to the summit. On the descent, they traversed over an apron into the Sandspitzenrinne slightly below the Sandspitzenschartel and from there around the Kleine Sandspitze into the Schartenschartl . This somewhat easier route soon turned out to be the normal route .

Via ferratas

For several years now, two via ferratas have led to the Große Sandspitze: the direct Ari-Schübel via ferrata from the Karlsbader Hut and the panorama via ferrata to the Laserzwand. The old difficulty ratings no longer apply there.
