The Große Bastergraben (also called Basterflut in some maps ) is an orographically right tributary of the Wapel in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany . It has a length of 10.6 km.

General

The Großer Bastergraben is not, as the name suggests, an artificial river. Rather, the Große Bastergraben is a brook , which some time ago was expanded like a trench and thus serves to drain the numerous meadows that it flows through. As a lowland stream with an average bed gradient of 2.2 ‰, the Great Bastergraben is subject to a mostly low current, which is why numerous marsh plants can be found in the upper reaches of the river . If the groundwater level is low, it is possible, especially in the summer months, that the stream may dry out temporarily. The course of the river has a sand bed about one meter wide and is limited by steep banks up to two meters high, which are mainly held by the roots of alder and other woody plants. Characteristic of the Großer Bastergraben is the largely at least one-sided stock of riparian trees.

course

Flow of the wet meadow area "Die Bastern" near Varensell

The Große Bastergraben rises in the Bornholte district of Verler at a height of 91 meters as the drainage of a spring pool (limnocrene spring ). From there it flows in a westerly direction over rural meadows in the direction of the Rietberg district of Varensell and crosses the eponymous wet meadow area "Die Bastern". After flowing through the village of Varensell - the Große Bastergraben also touches the local abbey - it crosses the road L782 and shortly thereafter takes on the Kleiner Bastergraben, which runs almost parallel but is 4.0 km shorter (water code number 3128364).

To the north of the Varenseller golf course and continuing over the meadow landscape, the Große Bastergraben finally passes the border with Rheda-Wiedenbrück and shortly afterwards flows into the Wapel in the area of the Lintel district .

Flora and fauna

Characteristic of the Großer Bastergraben is the low forest-like bank forest, in addition to alders , oak , ash , poplar , hornbeam , willow and birch can be found. In the upper reaches, marsh plants such as the marsh marigold appear . Since the Große Bastergraben mainly crosses meadow landscapes, the lapwing is a typical meadow bird of the Gütersloh district and is native to the entire watercourse.
