Varensell is a town in Rietberg and is located in the east of the Westphalian Bay . Varensell borders on the Gütersloh district of Spexard , the Rietberg villages of Druffel and Neuenkirchen , as well as Verl and the Rheda-Wiedenbrücker district of Lintel .

geography

Like all parts of the town of Rietberg, Varensell is naturally located in the Ems sand plain . The area of the village shows a flattening in a south-westerly direction, which can also be seen in the courses of the flowing waters leading through Varensell. These are the Ölbach in the north and the Wapelbach in the south . In addition, Varensell is crossed centrally by the Großer Bastergraben . The highest point of Varensell is located south of the former Vossschule at around 86  m above sea level. NN , the lowest at 75  m above sea level. NN in the area of the mills Darming on the Wapel and Meierfrankenfeld on the Ölbach.

Varensell can be divided into two main settlement areas. The former is in the area around the abbey; the second focal point further south has become interwoven with the settlement area of Neuenkirchen over the years , which has led to a sometimes confusing signposting there. The almost 18 km² sub -area predominantly shows a largely rural and park -like character with a high proportion of grassland and numerous individual farms surrounded by trees .

history

Varensell was first mentioned in a document in 1221. The name of the peasantry and the later community is derived from the name of the knight dynasty "those of Varensell". These were a family of the lower nobility in the Middle Ages. However, their trail is already lost around 1530. Only the name “Varensell” (actually Varensile) and the coat of arms, which was that of the knight family and shows three goblets on a red background, have remained. The three cups are understood by some researchers as a misinterpretation. They believe there are three fish, but this has not been proven or refuted.

On January 1, 1970, Varensell was incorporated into the city of Rietberg.

Buildings

The Benedictine Abbey of Our Lady is located in Varensell . The monastery was founded in 1902. The first monastery church was built in 1906 as a three-aisled hall church in neo-Gothic shapes. In 1956 the new parish and monastery church was added to the east. It is a cross-shaped complex with two square east towers. The interior, which is still under the impression of Expressionism , has wall pillars made of bricks. The old church building was retained even after the expansion and has served as a nuns choir ever since . The vaulted barrel of the chancel is lined with a huge mosaic that shows over 400 animal figures. In the Marienkapelle there is a statue of the Madonna from 1722. The monumental east window (8 × 9 m) was based on a design by Erentrud Trost .
