The Great Hornkopf is with a height of 3251  m above sea level. A. the third highest mountain in the Schober group and is located in the Spittal an der Drau district ( Carinthia ). It was first climbed on July 28, 1890 by Ludwig Purtscheller and Mathias Marcher .

location

The Große Hornkopf is located in the center of the Schobergruppe on the municipality border between Heiligenblut am Großglockner in the northwest and Großkirchheim in the southeast. It is located between the Kleiner Hornkopf in the south-southwest ( 3194  m above sea level ) and the Kreuzkopf ( 3102  m above sea level ) in the northeast, with the Großer Hornkopf and Kreuzkopf being separated by the Hornscharte ( 2958  m above sea level ). In addition, the Große Hornkopf has a long northwest ridge that breaks off towards the Elberfelder Hütte and a southeast ridge that slopes down into the valley of the Gradenbach . The Hornkees extends between the north-east ridge of the Großer Hornkopf and the Kreuzkopf, and the area between the staple heads and the Kleiner and Großer Hornkopf is covered by the Gössnitzkees. In addition to the Elberfelder Hütte, there is another nearby refuge , the Adolf-Noßberger-Hütte , located south of the Gradensee .

Promotion opportunities

The normal route to the Großer Hornkopf leads from Adolf-Noßberger-Hütte or from the Elberfelder Hütte to the Hornscharte. Since the northeast ridge of the Großer Hornkopf breaks off steeply at the Hornscharte, this is bypassed by a short descent to the Hornkees. The Hornkees is crossed at the upper edge of the Kees, which leads to a snow and firn channel that is 3067  m above sea level west of the ridge height . A. ends. After climbing the gully, the final ascent takes place on the northeast ridge ( II + ). The transition from Klammerscharte and Kleine Hornkopf ( III ) offers a variant for the ascent .
