Large dictionary of the Dutch language

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Great Dictionary of the Dutch language ( Dutch Van Dale Groot woordenboek van de Nederlandse taal ) is the largest explanatory dictionary of Dutch modern language. It is published by Van Dale Lexicografie bv . The 14th edition was published in 2005 and consists of three volumes and a CD-ROM . The 15th edition, expanded by around 18,000 additional words, appeared for the first time in color and with illustrations for difficult word explanations. Buyers of the new edition can also access further information online. In Dutch, the dictionary is also known as The Fat Van Dale ( De Dikke Van Dale ) or The Great Van Dale ( de Grote Van Dale ) or simply Van Dale . Its social relevance roughly corresponds to that of the German Duden , but with a fixed price of 179 € it is much more expensive.

history

The first edition of the dictionary appeared in 1864 under the title Nieuw woordenboek der Nederlandsche taal (Eng: New Dictionary of the Dutch Language ) and was edited by IM Calisch and NS Calisch. It was based on an older Dutch-French dictionary. The second edition was redesigned and thoroughly revised by Johan Hendrik van Dale , also adapting the spelling to the new system of de Vries and te Winkel from 1863, which became the basis for the spelling of Dutch in 1883. Van Dale died in 1872, shortly before the last parts of the dictionary appeared. The work on it was finished by his student Jan Manhave . The dictionary has been called van Dales since the fourth edition in 1898.

content

According to its own statement, the dictionary describes “today's Dutch, with a look back at the past 150 years”. For this reason, it also lists words and expressions that are now out of date. The meaning of the lemmas is recorded in chronological order, so that the etymologically oldest comes first.
