The parish village Großschwindau was historically part of the county of Haag and later of the district of Wasserburg . As of December 31, 2011, Großschwindau had 127 inhabitants. In 1961 there were still 137 inhabitants. See also the development of the population of St. Wolfgang .

Origin of the name Schwindau

Schwindau was also known as Schwindach (= the fast, swift brook). Another explanation for the names beginning with Schwind (e.g. Schwindau, Schwindach, Schwindkirchen , Schwindegg ) is the word suinen , which means something like 'to work out of the mud or swamp' or 'to dry out'. Accordingly, Schwindau would be a drained area.

St. Michael Church

Filial church of St. Michael

The originally Romanesque church of St. Michael from around 1350 was given a Gothic reticulated vault in 1460. After a lightning strike in 1783, the pointed tower was replaced by a very characteristic tower with a gable roof.

During this renovation, the entire church was furnished in baroque style. The figures of St. Benno and St. Korbinian on the high altar were made by the Landshut sculptor Christian Jorhan the Elder .
