history
Gronewald was first mentioned as Grunewald in the 13th century . In the original cadastre , the settlement founding in the Middle Ages can be found as Am Grünenwald . The settlement name is derived from the Old High German word gruoen (= to grow tall, green) or the Middle High German word gruo / gruonen (= green / be fresh) and means “green forest” or “young forest” .
According to the overview of the government district of Cöln , the place categorized as a building property owned a house in 1845. At that time there were ten people living in the village, all of them Catholic. The spelling of the place name at that time was Gronenwald.
