The Groundhog Day Blizzard 2011 was a widespread winter storm that hit the United States and Canada with heavy snowfalls between January 31 and February 2, 2011, causing traffic chaos in several US states and Canadian provinces . It is named after Groundhog Day , which is celebrated on February 2nd . In the early stages of the storm, meteorologists assumed that more than 100 million residents in the United States and Canada would be affected by the effects of the blizzard . The storm brought cold air, blowing snow, and sleet to an area that stretched from New Mexico and northern Texas to New England and eastern Canada. Blizzard conditions have been observed in many major cities along the blizzard's track including Tulsa , Oklahoma City , Kansas City , St. Louis , Springfield, Ill. , Chicago , Des Moines , Milwaukee , Detroit , New York City, and Boston .

Before the storm's warm front, freezing rain created danger in much of the Midwest and New England; in some areas more than 25 mm of ice accumulated. In many places the power supply failed, flights were canceled and airports closed. School bus connections were discontinued and local lessons were canceled. In Texas, several tornado events were also reported that preceded the cold front in the warm area of the storm. In some areas, winter thunderstorms also caused additional snowfall.

At the end of January, an Alberta Clipper drifted with cold air from the polar vortex over the Dakota states , followed by an extensive arctic high pressure area with a maximum air pressure of more than 1050 hPa and passing over Montana . A low pressure area from the Pacific Ocean moved from the northwest, later crossed the Rocky Mountains , merged with the Alberta Clipper and a developing Texas Low sucked moist air masses from the northwest Gulf of Mexico . The storm eventually intensified and developed a long warm front that reached into the New England states and moved along them to the northeast.

Lake effect snow was widespread on Lake Ontario and Lake Michigan due to northeasterly winds . Due to the prevailing air flow pattern, the storm developed very high forward speed and pulled towards the Great Lakes. The heaviest snowfalls occurred in a wide strip from central Oklahoma to Illinois, Indiana and the Ohio Valley . In southern Ontaria, an official blizzard warning was issued for the first time since 1993.
