Haller's sedge ( Carex halleriana ), also known as the stem-stemmed sedge , is a species of sedge ( Carex ) within the sour grass family (Cyperaceae).
description
Vegetative characteristics
Haller's sedge is a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 10 to 40 centimeters. It forms densely grassed stands through crooked rhizomes . The stem is slender and triangular. At its base there are frayed, dark brown leaf sheaths, at the top it is rough. The leaves are about as long as the stem and relatively narrow with a width of 1 to 2.5 millimeters.
Generative characteristics
The flowering period extends from March to June. Haller's sedge is a multi-year sedge. There are one to six female spikelets , each containing about ten flowers and with a length of 6 to 15 millimeters broad-ovoid. The upper one to three female spikelets are almost sessile and approached to the male spikelet. The lower one to three female spikelets stand on up to 17 centimeters long, thin stems and arise at the base of the stem. The husks are red-brown in color, their edge is light and their central stripe is green. They are pointed, ovate-lanceolate and about as long as the sacs. The fruit sacs are 3 to 4 millimeters long, beaked short and hairy. The single male spikelet is 5 to 25 millimeters long, 1 to 4 millimeters wide, sessile to short stalked.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 50, 52 or 54.
Occurrence
Haller's sedge occurs from the Mediterranean to Central Europe and Afghanistan . Occasionally it occurs in the warmest locations in the Alps , at the foot of the Alps , in the Swiss Jura , on the Isteiner Klotz and near Bad Kreuznach.
It grows in bushes, sparse forests and on rocky slopes. Haller's sedge thrives best on shallow, stony, dry, lime- rich and alkaline soils , in very warm locations . It occurs in Central Europe in plant communities of the associations Berberidion, Geranion sanguinei, Xerobromion, Quercion pubescentis and Carpinion.
