Planned landfill

The place became known through the resistance to the plans for a garbage dump in the so-called hospital forest . In 1987, the municipal waste disposal association Straubing Stadt und Land began planning a large landfill in a forest area west of Gschwendt. There were massive protests and the judicial ban on deforestation before the landfill was approved. In 1997, the plans were finally abandoned and no landfill was built at another location, as there was no longer any need for a landfill due to waste separation and recycling .
