Matthieu (Comte de) Dumas (born December 23, 1753 in Montpellier , †  October 16, 1837 in Paris ) was a French Général de division and military historian .

Life

Dumas took part in the American Revolutionary War as Rochambeau's adjutant and organized the Paris National Guard on his return to France . After the legislative assembly was dissolved (September 21, 1792), he found refuge in Switzerland . After the establishment of the directorate on October 28, 1795, he was elected to the council of the elderly.

Since Dumas was involved as a moderate in the proscription of the 18th Fructidor (September 14, 1797), he had to flee to Hamburg . Napoleon called him in 1800 and appointed him chief of the general staff of the so-called reserve army with which he crossed the Alps .

Dumas became State Councilor in 1802 , Général de division in 1805 and, under Joseph Bonaparte, Neapolitan Minister of War and Grand Marshal of the Imperial Household. He followed the king to Spain and was adjutant general of the imperial army there. The Kaiser soon called him back, whereupon he took part in the campaign against Austria . On July 12, 1809, he concluded the truce of Znojmo from. During the war of 1812, Dumas administered the post of general manager in the army. In 1813 he was captured with the occupation of Dresden .

1814 Dumas was by Louis XVIII. appointed to the Council of State, then dismissed in 1822. After he was elected to the Chamber in 1827, he went over to the opposition and in 1830 was one of the 221 deputies whose publication initiated the July Revolution . After the fall of Charles X , he reorganized the Paris National Guard under Ludwig Philipp and was appointed commander of all the National Guards of France. In 1831 he received the dignity of a pair .

He has made a name for himself in military literature through several publications. The Journal de l'adjudant-général Ramel, for example, was edited by him.

Matthieu Dumas died almost completely blind on October 16, 1837 in Paris.
