Guillaume Vallet , sometimes also Valet, (* December 6, 1632 in Paris , † July 1, 1704 ibid) was a French engraver .

Life

Vallet was the son of Jean Vallet , a print dealer, and his wife, Marguerite Liercourt . He had been friends with Étienne Picart since his early teens . At first Vallet was tutored by Pierre Daret . He and Étienne Picart then studied in Rome from 1655 to 1662. After returning to Paris in 1664 he became a member of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture . His recording piece was an engraving after Jean Jouvenet with a portrait of Jules Mazarin . Vallet sometimes cut from his own templates, but also made reproductions, etc. a. after Francesco Albani , Sébastien Bourdon , Annibale and Lodovico Carracci , Guillaume Courtois , Carlo Maratta , Nicolas Poussin , Raffael , Guido Reni and Jacques Stella . Copper engravings by him, based on the models of Antoine Paillet (1626–1701), can be found in a volume by Pierre Corneilles Le Théâtre de P. Corneille… .

Vallet was buried in the cemetery of St. Benoit in the 5th arrondissement in Paris.

Family
In 1664 he married Catherien Bovin , a merchant's daughter. The marriage resulted in numerous children, some of whom died in childhood. His son Jérôme (born January 18, 1667, † around 1720) followed in his footsteps and also became an engraver. Another son was Barthélémy Vallet (born May 11, 1674), who became a sculptor.
