The Gunggl (historically also written Gunkel ) is a side valley of the Zemmtal (Dornaubergtal) through which the Zemmbach flows in the Zillertal Alps in the Austrian state of Tyrol .

The Gunggl is drained by the 3.8 km long Gungglbach. The Gungglbach arises from the confluence of several source streams in the Gunggl below the Melkerscharte at around 1750  m above sea level. A. and flows into Rauth at 1021  m above sea level. A. in the Zemmbach . Its catchment area covers the entire Gunggl and is 12.5 km², of which 0.5 km² (4%) was glaciated as of 1988.

Neighboring valleys

In the east the Gunggl borders on the Floitengrund , in the south and southwest on the Zemmgrund and in the west on the Ingentkar .

The most famous summit of the Gunggl is the Zsigmondyspitze ( 3,089  m ) at the intersection of Gunggl, Floitental and Zemmgrund . Other peaks of the Gunggl are the Gaulkopf ( 2411  m ), the Kellerkopf ( 2722  m ), the Ochsner ( 3107  m ) and the Große Ingent ( 2917  m }).

Above the mouth of Gungglbachs in the Zemmbach is the free water of the Gungglbachs power plant Gunggl supplied and partly via a pressure tunnel in the memory Stillup derived.

The entire length of the AV hiking trail 522 leads through the Gunggl to the Melkerscharte ( 2814  m ) below the Zsigmondyspitze. South of the Melkerscharte, this path joins the Berliner Höhenweg above the Schwarzensee . Another hiking trail leads from the Maxhütte to the ridge below the Gaulkopf.

Maxhütte near the Gungglalm

The Maxhütte ( 1449  m ) is the only restaurant in the Gunggl. It is located a good kilometer into the valley. The Maxhütte was built as a hunting lodge in 1823. It was only converted into an inn in 1976. The Maxhütte can be reached from Ginzling in around 1¼ hours.
