The Zemmgrund is a valley in the rear Zillertal in the Zillertal Alps in Tyrol ( Austria ).

Location and landscape

The Zemmgrund is the valley of the upper Zemmbach and extends from the Zillertal main ridge (also the border to South Tyrol , Italy ) to where it meets the Zamser Grund near Breitlahner above Dornauberg-Ginzling . Both valleys unite here to form the Dornaubergtal , also called Zemmtal, the valley of the Zemmbach lower reaches. The right side of the valley belongs to Mayrhofen , the left to Finkenberg .

The Zillertal main ridge, which closes the Zemmgrund to the south, has a height of over 3000 m throughout. The highest peaks in the southern Zemmgrund are (from west to east) the Große Möseler  ( 3480  m above sea level ), the Turnerkamp  ( 3420  m above sea level ), the III. Hornspitze  ( 3254  m above sea level ) and the Schwarzenstein  ( 3269  m above sea level ).

The valley is divided into two characteristic sections. The upper part is the rear Zemmgrund and the barren high valleys of the source streams of the Zemmbach. On the flank of the main ridge, the Waxeggkees , Hornkees and Schwarzensteinkees glaciers extend into the Zemmgrund. The melt water from these glaciers feed the Zemmbach, which rises here. The Zemmbach springs are located around the Schwarzensee  ( 2472  m above sea level ) on the eastern edge of the valley below the Zsigmondyspitze  ( 3089  m above sea level ). The Waxeggalm is located in the valley floor .

The front Zemmgrund is a wooded valley floor and forms the last 4 kilometers on the middle course of the Zemmbach from the Grawandhütte at 1600  m above sea level. A. and the Grawandalm, to Breitlahner at 1250  m above sea level. A. , and includes Klausenalm and Schwemmalm, as well as a number of barren Kar high valleys on both sides.

Neighboring valleys

The neighboring valleys on the Austrian side are - in addition to the Zamser Grund from north to south-west - the Floite (Floitengrund) at the end of the valley in the north-east and in between the Gunggl and Ingentkar in the north. The mountain ridge to the Zamser Grund is crowned by the Großer Greiner  ( 3201  m above sea level ), the Schönbichler Horn  ( 3133  m above sea level ), the Furtschaglspitze  ( 3190  m above sea level ) and the Großer Möseler. The dominant mountains between Zemmgrund and Gunggl are the Große Ingent  ( 2917  m above sea level ) and the Zsigmondyspitze at the intersection with the Floite. To the south lies the Lappachtal (upper Mühlwaldtal ) and southeast the Weißenbachtal .

tourism

From Breitlahner, which can be reached by car or public bus, a hiking trail with the AV number 523 leads to the Berliner Hütte  ( 2042  m above sea level ) in the upper Zemmgrund. The walking time is about three hours. There are refreshment stops along the way on the Klausenalm  ( 1301  m above sea level ), the Grawandhütte  ( 1636  m above sea level ), the Alpenrosenhütte  ( 1873  m above sea level ) and the Waxeggalm  ( 1880  m above sea level ). The large number of places to stop for a break shows the special tourist importance of this valley.

The upper Zemmgrund is crossed by the Berliner Höhenweg , which leads from the Schönbichler Scharte  ( 3,081  m above sea level ) to the Berliner Hut and on past the Schwarzensee to the Mörchnerscharte  ( 2,872  m above sea level ). A hiking trail branches off above the lake with the AV number 522, which leads over the Melkerscharte  ( 2814  m above sea level ) into the Gunggl.
