Gustav Friedrich Bauer
Gustav Friedrich Bauer (born October 18, 1881 in Lüttringhausen , † July 26, 1968 in Heidelberg ) was a German Protestant pastor and historian .
Life
Gustav Bauer grew up in Barmen , where he graduated from high school in 1902 . He studied Protestant theology in Bonn and Berlin until 1905 and then studied history and geography for a few semesters. In 1906 he passed the first theological exam in Koblenz . The Vicariate in Hülsenbusch followed. Bauer passed his second theological exam in autumn 1908, again in Koblenz. In the following years he worked as a synodal vicar in Gummersbach and as an assistant preacher in Oberhausen . On July 12, 1910, he was ordained in Engelskirchen . From December 10, 1911 to April 30, 1952, he held the second pastoral position in the Protestant parish of Bad Laasphe in the Wittgenstein parish , where his grandfather Georg Bauer had already worked as a teacher and pastor from 1836 to 1890. After his retirement in 1951, Bauer moved to Bad Rothenfelde and in 1960 back to Laasphe.
Services
Bauer made a name for himself as a pastor of his community in the difficult times of two world wars and the global economic crisis. In addition, his historical interest in the region bore fruit. He was responsible for maintaining the archives of the Wittgenstein church district. Together with his intensive research in the Princely Sayn-Wittgenstein-Hohenstein Archive at Wittgenstein Castle near Laasphe, he acquired extensive historical and ecclesiastical knowledge in this way. Numerous articles provide lasting, valuable evidence of this. In contrast to other local history authors, Bauer managed to remain factual and ideological in his publications between 1933 and 1945. The most important and still not outdated publication of Bauer is his 1954 book on the Reformation in Wittgenstein.
Gustav Bauer was one of the founders of the Association for the History and Folklore of Wittgenstein in 1913. After the First World War, he was chairman of the association until 1927. When the association was re-established as the Wittgensteiner Heimatverein in 1956, Bauer was elected honorary chairman.
