This was followed by his command as second adjutant to the inspector general of the engineering corps. In this position Maentell rose to the end of March 1854 Captain on. As such, he came to the 3rd Engineer Inspection on September 3, 1859, where he became the commander of the 1st Company of the 4th Engineer Department. From there he came to Minden on May 2, 1863 as an engineer officer . There he was promoted to major on January 3, 1865 .

During the mobilization for the German War , he was transferred to Cologne as an engineer officer on May 29, 1866. He was confirmed in his post on July 10, 1866 for peacetime. On March 11, 1876, he left the examination board and became president of the engineering committee. He died on January 9, 1907 in Berlin and was buried on January 12, 1907 in the cemetery in Linienstraße .

In his assessment in 1856 General Brese-Winiary wrote : “Captain Maentell is an officer with natural talents and abundant knowledge, who has thoroughly abandoned his specialist studies and has also proven himself in all his previous services. With a quick perception he combines the gift of very clear presentation and with a military attitude a very decent, undemanding behavior. Due to his persistent and successful zeal, which was proven in the renewed revision of several pioneer regulations, he should have shown himself to be very worthy of excellent recognition. Given his high level of ability, he can be recommended with conviction for any further, even preferential, promotion and would also be completely suitable for service in the General Staff or in the War Ministry. "
