Gustav Schübler

Gustav Schübler (born August 15, 1787 in Heilbronn , † September 8, 1834 in Tübingen ) was a German scientist. Its botanical author abbreviation is " Schübl. "

Life

Gustav Schübler was the eldest son of the Mayor of Heilbronn, Christian Ludwig Schübler (1754-1820). He first attended the Heilbronn grammar school and later that in Ellwangen (Jagst) , where the family had moved after the takeover of Heilbronn by Württemberg . In 1806 he began studying natural sciences and medicine at the University of Tübingen . He became a member of the Corps Suevia I . After a short time in Vienna , he established himself as a general practitioner in Stuttgart in 1811 . In 1812 he went to the Fellenberg Institute in Hofwil as a teacher . He later came to the University of Tübingen as a professor of natural history and botany . He has published widely on scientific topics. His most important work is the Flora von Würtemberg published in 1834 , which he wrote together with Georg Matthias von Martens and in which all of the higher plants native to Württemberg were recorded and described for the first time. Schübler is also the doctoral supervisor of Albert Zeller (1830). From 1819, Schübler was married to the pastor's daughter Karoline Kern (1800–1874). The marriage had a son. In 1826 he was elected to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . He was a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences in Paris. Schübler died shortly before the publication of his Flora von Württemberg, which he wrote together with Martens.

Honors

According to Schübler, the plant genus is Schuebleria Mart. named from the gentian family (Gentianaceae).
