Gustav Wertheim (1843–1902), German mathematician

Gustav Wertheim (born June 9, 1843 in Imbshausen ; † August 31, 1902 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German mathematician , high school teacher and translator of scientific works. He mainly dealt with number theory and mathematical-historical research.

Life

Gustav Wertheim attended grammar schools in Hildesheim and Hanover as well as the upper grammar school in Braunschweig , where he passed the Abitur in 1862. He studied in Göttingen , Berlin and Heidelberg and acquired the Facultas Docendi in 1866 . Between 1866 and 1870 he was a private teacher in Hanover, Wiesbaden , Heidelberg, Zurich , Geneva and Guntersblum , then a teacher at the philanthropist of the Israelite community in Frankfurt am Main.

Services

Wertheim translated scientific works from physics , algebra and the work of Diophantos of Alexandria . He wrote his own mathematical textbooks and number theory articles. From 1897 he was mainly interested in mathematical and historical topics. He published several articles on theorems of Pierre de Fermat , and in 1893 a work on Hebrew arithmetic by the chief rabbi Elia Misrachi .
