Gustave Tiffoche

Gustave Tiffoche (born July 23, 1930 in Saint-Nazaire , † July 25, 2011 in Guérande ) was a French painter , potter and sculptor .

biography

Gustave Tiffoche attended schools in Saint-Nazaire and, like most of the remaining residents, had to leave the city at the end of 1942 after heavy bombardments. After returning he attended the technical high school between 1945 and 1947.

From 1947 he took up a position at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique , one of the largest shipyards in the world, for the next 16 years , where he worked as a technical draftsman and artist-designer. He was involved in the construction and interior design of ships such as the Shalom , the France and many other transatlantic liners. He and his team were also tasked with developing new shapes for ship chimneys, and his proposal for a new arch shape allowed the chimneys to be lengthened, making them the largest in the world.

After years of apprenticeship at Château de Ratilly with Norbert Pierlot and in La Borne, Gustave Tiffoche settled in Guérande ( Loire-Atlantique ) in 1961 . Here, over the years, he developed and refined various processes in the fields of pottery handicrafts and the manufacture of glazed earthenware. In his studios, the focus of production was on tableware services and elements of interior decoration such as lighting fixtures, vases, plates and Claustra. The construction of a very large stove for wood fires also enabled him to produce monumental ceramic works such as fountains (an example can be seen in the Parc de la Beaujoire in Nantes ) or decorative partition walls that can move freely in individual elements, for example for the Magen H. Gallery in New York or as finely perforated partition walls for cruise ships (for example for Sovereign of the Seas and for Renaissance One ), which also documents his lasting reference to shipbuilding.

During the decades of his pottery career, Gustave Tiffoche took part in, or was invited to, all of the important guild exhibitions throughout France . There were also factory shows around the world, including in Stuttgart , Montreal , Munich , Faenza and Dakar . Monumental ceramic fountains by Gustave Tiffoche can be seen in many places, for example at the IUT in Saint-Nazaire or in La Roche-sur-Yon , Niort , Melle , Rennes , Bouaye , Nantes etc.

From 1970 Gustave Tiffoche trained many potters and ceramic artists from France and all over Europe and Africa.

Gustave Tiffoche's potter's mark has the monogram "gt" surrounded by a circle (see illustration). This signature seal can always be found as an engraved stamp on the bottom of the respective work and there on the edge. Unique items are sometimes signed with the full name.

In parallel to his ceramic work, Gustave Tiffoche devoted himself increasingly to painting from 1973 onwards. His pictures belong to the lyrical abstraction , the works develop a combination of abstraction and realism , which opens the way for the artist to a free representation. These works, too, in which the artist's mischievous humor is often manifested and which are shaped by a deep humanistic philosophy , have been shown at a large number of solo and group exhibitions in France and in some European countries. From 1987 to 1990 he taught at the Ecole d'art plastique in Saint-Nazaire.

Gustave Tiffoche was appointed Chevalier des Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1987.
