Good night, friends is a song by Reinhard Mey . He wrote it under the pseudonym Alfons Yondraschek for the singing duo Inga and Wolf . They should take part in the Eurovision Song Contest 1972 . In the German preliminary decision in 1972 , however, the song only took fourth place. Mey published his interpretation for the first time on the album Mein Achtel Lorbeerblatt , released in the same year . He also published a French and a Dutch version of the song himself with Bonsoir mes amis (1972) and Goede nacht vrienden (1975).

Content and structure

In the song, a person says goodbye to friends with whom he has once again spent one or more days. In addition to the hospitality, he emphasizes the open discussions. The hospitality is symbolized by the light that "seems warmer" with these friends.

The song begins with the four-line refrain , the first line of which is introduced by the title. This is followed by three four-line stanzas , each with a subsequent refrain. The stanzas consist of paired rhymes , the refrain has an encompassing rhyme .

music

The song is in A major , with the subdominant parallel following the prelude . In addition to the other two major chords , the dominant parallel is also used, but not the parallel minor chord .

The range is one octave from the root . The melody has numerous tone repetitions. The first two refrains do not end on the root note, but on the third . So only at the end is a real conclusion reached.

Both the verse and the chorus begin with triplet-like figures. More triplets follow in the stanza. Mey gives these motifs a very free rhythm.

  • The Dutch radio program Met het Oog op Morgen ( With the View of Tomorrow ) begins and ends with the song Gute Nacht, Freunde , since the first episode in January 1976 . This shortened version is in German. In 1972 the Dutch duo Klipstein & Hammelburg published a Dutch version with a different text under the title Luister nog even . Another Dutch version with its own adaptation of the German text was published as Goedenacht vrienden by the band The KiK in 2017 .
  • The song was played for many years at the songwriting festival Songs on a summer evening as the last song at the end of the event, when all the performers once again took the stage and sang it together.
  • In the feature film French for Beginners , the French variant Bonsoir mes amis is used in the soundtrack.
