The Gymnasium am Steinwald (GaS) is a grammar school in Neunkirchen ( Saarland ) with a mathematical, scientific and linguistic branch. It is sponsored by the Neunkirchen district .
history
The history of GaS begins in Neunkirchen with the establishment of the private family school in 1864 by Carl Ferdinand von Stumm-Halberg . Separately by gender, girls and boys were trained in two classrooms to attend a high school . The school location in what was then Bahnhofstrasse was changed three times by 1887, when the school was transferred to the former municipality of Neunkirchen: in 1881 they moved into the Viktoriakrankenhaus , in 1884 they moved to the Sprenger house and from 1886 lessons took place in House of the brewery owner Friedrich Schmidt. The public parity girls' school became in 1911, under the direction of the director Arnold Knoke, the public parity high school for girls .
The period from 1900 onwards was characterized by a fragmentation of the school into different locations: In 1919, the Lyzeum, the public high school for girls, was taught simultaneously in five buildings. Since the number of pupils continued to rise, the Langguth house was occupied in 1933 , and the Danco house from 1934 onwards. The growing number of students to be taught and the resulting acute lack of space are hallmarks of the first few years up to the beginning of Nazi rule in what was then the German Reich .
After the end of the Second World War , teaching was carried out in what was then the Städtisches Mädchenrealgymnasium from 1946 at the Bachschulhaus and Haus Langguth locations , before the school, which was renamed the Staatliche Mädchenrealgymnasium Neunkirchen in 1948 , was housed in the Schloßschulhaus and in the old district court from 1949 .
In 1952, the construction of today's building complex began to counteract the latent lack of space. The existing buildings were occupied in three stages by 1961.
In 1974 the school was renamed Staatliches Gymnasium am Steinwald ; Such a process took place for the last time in 1992 when the current name Gymnasium am Steinwald was given.
Excurricular offers
In addition to the compulsory curriculum content of the respective subject combinations, a wide range of options for personal development support are also offered. In addition to the range of subjects offered, the offers also include content from the school life of the GaS.
Facilities, support and care
The school ends after grade 12 with the general higher education entrance qualification ( Abitur ). If it is necessary to leave the Gymnasium at an earlier point in time, depending on the last grade you attended, you can confirm that you are equal to the secondary school leaving certificate or the secondary school leaving certificate .
Catering is provided by an in-house bistro with appropriately equipped lounging facilities. Lunch is offered here every day; In addition, special offers such as 'Schnitzel Day' ensure variety on the menu.
In order to carry out independent research or simply to rummage, a library has been set up which has extensive holdings from numerous disciplines . After opening in 2000, the collection currently comprises more than 2500 books. In 2008 the library was named "Best School Library" by the Ministry of Education , Family , Women and Culture and the GaS received prize money of 1500 €.
Social projects
The GaS has been involved in various forms for those in need for years. Since 2005, the program d'assistance aux familles et aux orphelins (German: aid program for families and orphans ) of the church district Saar-Ost has been supported with money and urgently needed materials. This primarily supports sustainable projects in Rwanda , which should improve the livelihood of the people living there.
The GaS goes Rock project, which was carried out for the first time in the 2011/2012 school year, is intended to create the financial resources to be able to provide constant monetary support services. The profits from the music event go to the Rwanda aid program and thus contribute to the ongoing institutional consolidation of the social orientation of the GaS.
The student company Rentables Brett , founded as part of the sustainable business idea seminar , also supports the Rwanda aid program. The company offers shelf space that can be rented to offer and sell its own products. In addition to the rental income, the student company receives a commission on the sales proceeds. All of the profits go into the Rwanda aid program. Since the business idea is based on the concept of sustainability, subsequent generations of schoolchildren can keep the company running by always filling the positions in the student company with younger students.
The "5-pillar funding concept"
A concept was developed at the GaS which meets a wide range of life situations and demands and offers comprehensive prophylactic and acute opportunities for help and support.

Promotion of the gifted | Numerous events that go beyond the mandatory timetable can be attended to further expand performance. In addition to working groups, there are also numerous competitions to choose from |
World of learning
Over the years, the concept of the world of learning (WdL) has firmly established itself at the GaS. Here, skills and abilities with regard to the individual learning, working and implementation methodology are acquired by the students.
The concept provides for different content in the individual grade levels in order to ultimately provide a comprehensive methodical repertoire.
