Juniperus recurva is a plant from the family of the cypress family (Cupressaceae). It isnative tocentral Asia .

description

Juniperus recurva grows as an evergreen shrub or tree that can reach heights of up to 10 meters. The branches branch straight or bent slightly downwards from the trunk and form a broad, conical or pyramidal crown . The curved branches hang down from the branches. The light gray-brown to brown bark flakes off in thin strips.

The needle-like, almost straight leaves are arranged in three whorls and are 3 to 10 millimeters long and about 1 millimeter wide. They are greenish white or slightly blue-green on the upper side of the leaf and have two white stomatal bands . The base is sloping and the tip is pointed.

Juniperus recurva is single-sexed ( monoecious ), there are seldom dioecious ( dioecious ) trees. The yellow male cones are elongated-egg-shaped to elliptical-egg-shaped. They contain ten to 16 oppositely arranged microsporophylls which each carry three pollen sacs . The female cones are egg-shaped with a length of 0.6 to 1.2 centimeters and a thickness of 0.5 to 0.9 centimeters. They are initially blue-green in color, but when they are ripe in the second year, they turn dark purple-brown. Each cone bears an egg-shaped to conical-egg-shaped seed with a length of 5 to 9 millimeters and a width of 3 to 6 millimeters.

Occurrence

The natural range of Juniperus recurva includes Afghanistan , Pakistan , the north and northeast of India, Kashmir , Nepal , Bhutan , the southwest of China and the north of Myanmar . In India, Juniperus recurva is found in Arunachal Pradesh , Sikkim and Kumaun . In China it occurs in the south of the Tibet Autonomous Region , in Sichuan and in northwestern Yunnan .

In China, Juniperus recurva thrives at altitudes of 1,800 to 3,900 meters, especially in forests and thickets.

The wood from Juniperus recurva is used. The species is also used as an ornamental wood.

Systematics

It was first described as Juniperus recurva in 1825 by Francis Buchanan-Hamilton in Prodromus Florae Nepalensis 2 , page 55. A synonym for Juniperus recurva Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don is Sabina recurva (Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don) Antoine .

The species Juniperus recurva is divided into up to two varieties :

  • Juniperus recurva var. Coxii (ABJacks.) Melville most often grows as a shrub, a tree. This variety is also called Juniperus coxii A.B. Jacks by some authors . viewed.
  • Juniperus recurva var. Recurva is the nominate form and usually grows as a tree, rarely as a shrub.

Danger

Juniperus recurva is classified as "not endangered" in the IUCN Red List . The variety coxii is classified as "endangered". In both entries, however, it is pointed out that a new check of the hazard is necessary.
