Hanging coffins are used in a type of burial in which the coffins are placed in rock walls. They can be found in different places, e.g. B. in China (mainly in the south) and in the Philippines .

Hanging coffins have been used by various ethnic groups, the most famous being that of the Bo (in) in southwest China. They are made from a single trunk. Some lie on beams that protrude from the mountain wall, others are placed in caves or crevices. Others lie on ledges.

More than 1,700 years ago, Shen Ying沈 莹 from the Wu kingdom wrote about it in his work Linhai shuitu zhi during the Three Kingdoms Period (220–280) . In China, they were recorded or found in the provinces (etc.) Sichuan , Chongqing , Yunnan , Guizhou , Guangxi , Taiwan , Fujian , Hunan , Hubei and Jiangxi .

The burial sites of the hanging coffins of the Bo (Bórén xuánguānzàng (mù) 僰 人 悬棺 葬 (墓)) in Gong County (珙 县) of the prefecture-level city of Yibin in the southeast of the southwest Chinese province of Sichuan have been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China since 2006 (3-249). The Xianshui-Yan rock tomb (Xiānshuǐ Yán yámùqún 仙水 岩崖 墓群; Hanging coffins on the cliffside of the Fairy-Water Rocks ) in Longhu Shan in Guixi in the Jiangxi province has been on the list since 2001 (5-167) .
