Håkon Austbø (born October 22, 1948 in Kongsberg ) is a Norwegian pianist and university teacher .

Life

After first appearances in his Norwegian homeland, Austbø studied at the Paris Conservatory and the École Normale de Musique there . In 1970 he first won the Concours National de la Guilde Française des Artistes Solistes , followed in 1971 by the first prize in the Olivier Messiaen competition for contemporary music in Royan . He later also attended the Juilliard School in New York City and the Munich University of Music . In 1974 he won a prize at the international Munich competition (together with Marina Horak ), in 1975 he finally won the Ravel competition and the UNESCO Rostrum Bratislava as a member of the Trio du Nord .

Austbø's career took him through Europe , Asia and America , but most of his time he spent in the Netherlands . In 1989 he received the Norwegian Music Critics' Prize , was named Artist of the Year in 1992 and was awarded the Grieg Prize in 2003. He now holds the chair for piano at the University of Stavanger . Furthermore, in the LUCE project he initiated, he endeavors to create a special color realization of Scriabin's Prometheus .

Discography

Austbø gained special recognition for his recordings of works by Messiaen and Scriabin. In 1998 he won the Edison Prize for his interpretation of the Catalog d'Oiseaux . Various recordings by both composers have been awarded the Spellemann Prize, including the complete sonata work of Scriabin. Among the other recordings of Austbø are the complete piano works of Debussy , Janáček , Saties and Grieg as well as works by Schumann , Brahms , Schat , Boucourechliev , Hedstrøm , Boulez , Racot , Tveitt , Thommessen and many others.
