Högna Sigurðardóttir

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Högna Sigurðardóttir (also: Sigurðardóttir-Anspach; born July 6, 1929 in Birtingaholti, Vestmannaeyjar , Iceland ; † February 10, 2017 in Reykjavík ) was a leading Icelandic architect . Her 1960s residential buildings in Iceland combine local traditions with brutalist modernity . In France, where she mainly worked as an architect, her work focused on educational institutions and other public buildings.

Life

Högna Sigurðardóttir grew up in a small fishing village on the Westman Islands on the south coast of Iceland. With her career aspiration to be an architect, she applied to various European universities and was finally accepted - without any knowledge of French - at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1949 , which she graduated in 1960. In 1948 she married Gerhardt (also: Gérald) Anspach, a Berlin-born emigrant who had participated with the US Army in the Allied landings in Normandy and then studied art in Paris. They had two daughters and after a stopover in New York settled in Paris.

Although Sigurðardóttir had had her own office in Paris since 1961, after the birth of her first daughter she temporarily worked again in Iceland, where she designed some residential buildings in the 1960s, which were praised for the skilful combination of Icelandic building traditions with brutalist modern architecture. Her Bakkaflöt house in Garðabær from 1965 was listed in World Architecture: a Critical Mosaic as one of the 100 most important buildings of the 20th century in Europe.

From 1963 to 1966 she was employed as an urban planner at the Institut d'aménagement et d'urbanisme de la Région parisienne , where she met her colleague Adrien Fainsilber . With a joint design, they took part in the ideas competition for the development of the University of Paris Nord in Villetaneuse in 1967 and won first place. The two architects then oversaw the implementation of the project. The next joint project was the University of Compiègne in collaboration with Fainsilber and another architect.

In the 1970s Högna worked with various partners in the joint architecture office: Jean-Pierre Humbaire became her first partner in 1972, André Crespel in 1974 and Bernard Ropa in 1988. At times the office operated under the name ACHR. Her architectural focus in France was on the construction of educational buildings (schools, kindergartens) and other public buildings.

After separating from her husband in 1992, Högna Sigurðardóttir returned to Iceland. One daughter, filmmaker Sólveig Anspach (* 1960), died of cancer in 2015.

On the occasion of her eightieth birthday and a donation of her work to the Reykjavík Art Museum, the latter organized the architect's first retrospective in collaboration with the Icelandic Architects' Association at the end of 2009 .
