The Hübner-Haus is a Hamburg office building on Poststrasse between the New Wall and the street Bei der Stadtwassermühle in the Neustadt district in the Hamburg-Mitte district . It is administered by Huebner Grundstücksverwaltung GmbH & Co KG, and Thomas Huebner is the managing director .

Construction of the building

Originally only the building at Neuer Wall 22 belonged to the Hübner house. The building has five floors, a classical facade and is located on the corner of Poststrasse. In 1907 Georg Huebner senior bought the property at Poststrasse 2-4 and had it built - for the first time from concrete. The new building was connected to the original building on Neuer Wall and so it became today's corner building. It is considered the first concrete building in Hamburg and is outwardly almost unchanged except for the top floor and the shop window area. Architect for the extension from Poststrasse to the street. Henry Grell was at the city water mill , completion was in 1909. The facade with its closely lined columns and flat bay windows corresponds to the most progressive state of the office building architecture at the time of construction. The highest level was aimed for with the interior design. This is particularly evident in the lavishly furnished entrance hall in the style of the Vienna Secession .

Company formation

Company Georg Huebner Hamburg

Christian Georg Adolph Hübner was the son of a shipowner from Warnemünde . In 1883 he swore the Hamburg citizen oath and founded a company together with his wife Mathilde , which he entered in the commercial register on July 8, 1884 under the name Georg Hübner. The company had a pastry shop, a marzipan factory and a café . A very fine café - cakes and pies from our own production, plus the finest marzipan from his own steam marzipan factory and the stylish furnishings of the café met the highest standards. In a showcase in today's stairwell there are historical pictures to lovingly remember Café Hübner - they show the café, the rooms and the furnishings. Drawings show well-dressed women in large hats and gentlemen of the high society who were regular guests there. The café was so exclusive that even women without a male companion were allowed to meet there for coffee , tea or hot chocolate , a specialty at the time in Hamburg. The building on Neuer Wall soon became too small for the company and the café, which was mainly run by Mathilde Hübner. The family decided to expand and so the neighboring property on Poststrasse was bought. Georg Huebner senior did not live to see the building completed, his son Georg completed the construction. The café and pastry shop were now on the two lower floors of the new corner building, the two middle floors were mainly rented to lawyers and brokers , and the two upper floors were used for baking and making marzipan. Hübner's delicacies were often delivered to the town hall and the marzipan was even exported.

War years

The First World War also hit the Hübner company hard. The time of delicious feasts was over. Instead of cakes and ice cream with whipped cream , there was now need and misery . After the war there was inflation and even the well-heeled regulars became impoverished and stayed away. The furnishings in the café also changed, instead of Japanese flair and paintings , the café on the upper floor now got wood and fabric covers, cozy but no longer luxurious . The rooms were divided up differently, there was a smoking room for around 150 guests and a separate ladies room. During the Second World War , the Hübner house had the only functioning water pump on the Neuer Wall and many people came only for that reason. In addition, there was now also cooking and lunch - before the currency reform against food stamps . Café Hübner became an important supplier for the many working people. After the war and with the currency reform of June 20, 1948, the German mark came along and better times finally began again for the Huebner company. One day later there were pies, cakes, sorbets and many other delicacies again. In 1961 the café was closed for personal reasons.

Modern office and commercial building

The Hübner-Haus is now a modern commercial building in the city center on Poststrasse and Neuer Wall. There are shops on the ground floor to the mezzanine , and on the floors above there is a mixture of office space and various medical practices . In the attic is the Hübner Property Management GmbH & Co KG. On the ground floor in the entrance area, the company founder and namesake of the building and the café at the time are remembered. Above the entrance is the name Hübner-Haus, on the door handles of the entrance door there is twice the letter H. The idea of a small exhibition in a showcase to commemorate Café Hübner came from the great-grandson of the company founder - Jörg Hübner. He died in an accidental death in 2003; the objects on display come from his collection. The family history is documented there in text form , historical pictures of the café and the marzipan factory as well as porcelain - white and with family name. He himself did not see the completion of the showcase, relatives and friends took care of it. There are two small elevators on the left , the staircase is on the right. In between there is a box that gives the impression that the concierge is about to return. Sometimes there is a light on there, there is a historic telephone on the wall , an open newspaper from earlier times and writing utensils on the desk . At Christmas time, the box is decorated with a garland and decorative gift packages on the roof. In the entrance area there are marble walls with graphic patterns, and colored mosaic tiles on the door frames of the intermediate door - some in gold. The walls on the upper floors are brightly tiled with graphic ornaments, the elevators on the floors are bordered with mosaic tiles.
