The Hühnerwasser , officially chicken water , is a stream near Spremberg in the south of Brandenburg . He once owned a natural spring near the excavated village of Klein Buckow . Today, however, it is fed exclusively from pit water from the Welzow-Süd opencast mine . At the mouth, the water pours into the Spremberg dam , thus into the Spree.

The development of the ecosystems in the source area has been accompanied by scientific projects since 2005. The Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus-Senftenberg in cooperation with the opencast mine operator LEAG (since 2016, previously with Vattenfall Europe ) is playing a leading role . For this purpose, the headwaters were artificially created and, among other things, a layer of clay was built into the subsoil to collect the rainwater.
