The h_da-Hochhaus (also HDA-Hochhaus , Hochhaus C10 , Hochhaus der Hochschule Darmstadt ; officially building C10) is a building of the Hochschule Darmstadt (h_da) and with a height of 66.38 m AN1 is also the tallest building in Darmstadt .

history

The building had its topping-out ceremony in December 1963 on the Schöfferstraße campus (the former "parade ground") and in October 1965 the State Engineering School for Mechanical Engineering was able to move into it. The construction costs were around 35 million DM (today about 75.2 million EUR ). The Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (FHD), which was founded on August 1, 1971 and emerged from the State Engineering School, took over the 16- storey building. Since then, the AStA , the departments “Mathematics and Natural Sciences”, “Electrical Engineering and Information Technology” and partly also the department “Mechanical Engineering and Plastics Technology”, the Student Service Center (SSC), the Presidium and other administrative units have been housed here.

Complete renovation and expansion

From 2009 to 2011 the high-rise was completely refurbished by Staab Architects for EUR 49.2 million. During this time, courses were held in alternative quarters; Among other things, in a container building (building B14), which was temporarily built southwest of the mechanical engineering and plastics technology department (building C12). As part of the renovation, the facade was also renewed, which was awarded the German facade prize for curtain-type, rear-ventilated facades from the trade association for curtain-type, rear-ventilated facades in 2013 . On the southern front, over 368 fixed shading elements made of anodized aluminum were attached in front of the windows . The northern front was extensively glazed and fitted with vertical pilaster strips . The east and west sides were "designed as a vertical relief made of light metal".

A four-meter-wide extension was built on the east side, in which an installation shaft for the building services and a fire service elevator are housed. During the renovation, the main entrance was moved from the west to the south side of the building. Like the entire building, the newly created forecourt was designed to be barrier-free .

Transmitter

The VHF transmitters for the following radio programs were located on the roof of building C10 until the renovation :

Others

Due to the structure of the south facade, the building is popularly known as the “ cheese grater ”.

The student café Glaskasten , which is operated by the AStA, is located on the ground floor .

The two stairwells each have 327 steps.

Before the renovation, the facade was similar to the Plärrer high-rise in Nuremberg.

Due to the height of the building, the municipal fire brigades could only "guide" up to the 7th floor. Stricter fire protection conditions stipulated that in 1981 a 65-meter-long rescue hose was installed on the roof of the high-rise building. In the event of a fire, people could have been evacuated in this way. The rescue tube was never used in an emergency; it was only used once a year for maintenance purposes. After the renovation, the rescue hose became obsolete and scrapped thanks to new fire protection equipment.

The building offers a good view of the surrounding area. When the weather is nice, the Taunus with the Großer Feldberg and the Frankfurt skyline can be seen in the north, the Rheinhessen hill country in the west and the northern Odenwald in the south . To the east you have a view of Darmstadt and its sights (see panorama).
