Career

James Duggan was brought to wrestling and trained by the wrestler and promoter Fritz von Erich . He made his debut in 1979. Vince McMahon Sr. became aware of him and signed him briefly for the World Wrestling Federation , where he initially acted in 1981 as an opponent for the young Hulk Hogan . Later that year, Duggan appeared for various promotions such as Georgia Championship Wrestling and especially Mid-South Wrestling (later the Universal Wrestling Federation ).

Mid-South Wrestling / Universal Wrestling Federation (1982-1986)

Duggan made his debut in the Mid-South Wrestling league in 1982 as part of the Rat Pack grouping around Ted DiBiase , Matt Borne and Mr.Olympia. After Butch Reed also made his debut, Duggan led a feud with him about the addition of the name Hacksaw , and who should lead this addition. The group carried out several feuds at the time. Opponents were mostly crowd favorites like Magnum TA and Junkyard Dog . After DiBiase teamed up with Skandor Akbar, Duggan refused allegiance and became a crowd-pleaser for the first time. The story ended in a legendary cage fight against DiBiase.

At this time he got his later famous square timber aside for the first time in order to be able to defend himself against the old group. He was allowed to win titles as a crowd favorite, such as the North American Heavyweight Championship. After Mid-South Wrestling became the Universal Wrestling Federation, Jim Duggan lost to Terry Gordy for the UWF Heavyweight Championship. In the following years Duggan won the UWF Tag Team Championship with Terry Taylor. As reigning UWF Tag Team Champion, he lost a Loser Leaves Town Match against One Man Gang in January 1987 , which declared his renewed move to WWF.

World Wrestling Federation (1987-1993)

As an American patriot with a flag and edged wood
In his first time in the WWF / WWE

Jim Duggan made his first major appearance for the WWF at WrestleMania III when he interrupted Nikolai Volkoff while singing the Soviet national anthem. Duggan's ring person was laid out as an American patriot who often stormed the ring with an American flag and square timber, chanting "USA, USA" . After being briefly fired for possessing marijuana and driving under the influence of alcohol , Duggan returned to the WWF and won the Battle Royal at the first Royal Rumble in 1988 . Despite his popularity with the fans, Duggan's character remained of a rather comedic nature, so that he could not record any title successes in the seven years at WWF. However, his feuds were so well staged that Dugan was able to appear in many major events. The first feud program led Duggan against Harley Race . After the feud went down well with the Fas, Duggan was allowed to compete with another protégé of Bobby Heenan , Andre The Giant . Also Duggan feuded against Bad News Brown , resulting in a match at Wrestlemania V opening tete. In the same year, 1989, he embarked on a program against King Haku, from which he was allowed to take his crown. Thus, during his time as King of the WWF, he got the suffix "King". In the same year he should lose the title of king of the WWF to Randy Savage . In 1990 he got a program against the team from Jimmy Hart. In Wrestlemania VI, he defeated Dino Bravo to then feud against Earthquake . Its popularity peaked, culminating in a title match for the world championship belt against Sgt. Slaughter , who held the title at the time. He lost the fight and was allowed to appear as a commentator on Wrestlemania VII, which took place only a little later. Then he slipped into the so-called undercard. In the last year of his presence in the WWF, he feuded against Shawn Michaels for the Intercontinental title.

One of his last significant appearances was in 1993 when he became one of the first "victims" of the novice yokozuna .

World Championship Wrestling (1994-2001)

In 1994 Duggan moved to WCW while retaining his ring character and was allowed to win the WCW United States Championship against Steve Austin . In the following period he remained present in the lower to middle combat map.

In the summer of 1998, Duggan was diagnosed with kidney cancer, after which he took a break from wrestling. After overcoming the disease, he returned to WCW in late 1999. He got a janitor's gimmick and as such happened to "find" the belt of the several months vacant WCW World Television title . Duggan claimed the title for himself and defended it in matches until it was finally discontinued in April 2000.

Independent (2002-2005)

In the following years, Duggan toured mainly through smaller independent leagues. In March and October 2003 he made three appearances for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (then NWA: TNA). In August 2004 he won the IWA World Heavyweight Championship at IWA Japan .

World Wrestling Entertainment (2005-2009)

Duggan was recruited from October 2005 onwards for appearances at WWE. From June 2006 he was employed full-time by the WWE again. Duggan acted as a builder opponent and practical examiner for new wrestlers.
