history

The bar opened on November 16, 1990. The concept was to create an open space for everyone and to be a living room and shelter at the same time. The restaurant was the first gay bar in the Schöneberger Kiez without darkened windows and without an entrance bell. In the 1930s there was a restaurant there that Marlene Dietrich had already been a guest. Since the port was founded, many other prominent guests have been to be found here, such as Ian McKellen , Andy Bell , Martin Gore , Marc Almond , Hape Kerkeling , Portishead and Isa Genzken was also a regular guest at the port for a long time. The American photographer Nan Goldin was also a guest at the port during her stay in Berlin in the 1990s and photographed the interior. Two of these recordings were part of the 1996 exhibition of American Art in the 20th Century at the Whitney Museum , New York. She later exhibited the pictures in a solo exhibition (Berlin Work. Photographs 1984–2009) at the Berlinische Galerie 2010/2011.

At the end of January 2019, the landlord terminated the lease. After expressions of solidarity and broad protests from guests and operators, and politicians like Volker Beck and Berlin's Senator for Culture Klaus Lederer campaigning for the port to remain, a new, long-term lease was negotiated. A larger public was reached through the protest party on January 3rd, which took place when the keys were actually handed over in the port under the motto “10,026 port nights - what now?”.
