The Hahnenbogen is a ridge in the extension area of the Bavarian Forest National Park .

geography

It is halfway between the better-known mountains Großer Falkenstein (1315) and Großer Rachel (1452). The border with the Czech Republic runs about 1.5 km to the east . The ridge has two peaks, the northern one, 1232  m above sea level. NN high Kleiner Hahnenbogen and the 800 m southeast lying 1257  m above sea level. NN high Great Rooster Arch . Below the north flank of the Kleiner Hahnebogen are the two swamp areas Dreilinienmoos and Grenzmoos , which together cover 150 hectares in a depression called “ Gfällei ”  . This is where the Stubenbach rises , which drains to the North Sea. One of the main European watersheds , the Elbe-Danube watershed , runs across the ridge . The brooks that arise on the southern and western flanks of the ridge drain via the Kleiner Regen as receiving waters into the Danube area towards the Black Sea .

history

The jungle-like area was only sporadically settled in the valleys in the 16th century, as it is climatically disadvantaged. Due to its geographical location, it is characterized by long, snowy winters and short, rainy summers. The hard gneiss and granite soils of volcanic origin could hardly be cultivated in an agriculturally productive manner during the short vegetation periods and formed the natural border between the Kingdom of Bohemia and the Kingdom of Bavaria . Only a few hunting parties penetrated the area and the abundance of wood fed some charcoal burners who supplied the emerging glass industry. The cattle breeders used the clearings created by the charcoal burning as grazing grounds after they were re-greened. In the Bavarian original cadastre from the 1810s, only the path for the cattle drive and the hamlet of Buchenau can be seen. As ground monuments are protected on the southern and western foot of the ridge on the one hand the former areas of three Disposed glassworks and several medieval gold soaps -Schürfstätten in the stream valleys.

perpetration

On its rocky summit, which is rarely climbed, there is a small summit cross , and you can also look down on Zwiesel and Regen . The Hahnenbogen is only visited by hikers who are familiar with the area, as it is difficult to find. The easiest ascent leads from Buchenau over the Lindberger Schachten to the summit in about 2 hours, but the last part is not marked.
