Haymo from Halberstadt
Haymo von Halberstadt (or Haimo von Halberstadt ) († March 27, 853 in Halberstadt ) was a Benedictine monk. From 840 until his death in 853 he was Bishop of Halberstadt .
biography
There is only scant information about Haymo's living conditions. A monk from the Ilsenburg monastery named Rochus wrote a biography, but only a century and a half after the bishop's death. It has only survived in fragments.
Haimo was a classmate and childhood friend of Hrabanus Maurus , probably with Alcuin in Tours . Hraban dedicated the work "De rerum natura" to his fellow student around 845. Haimo was a document writer in Fulda from 815-22, then a monk in Hersfeld . In 840, Ludwig the German appointed him bishop of Halberstadt. As such, he took part in the synods of Mainz in 847 and 852.
He let the tithe from Friesenfeld flow to the monastery of Hersfeld , which his city disliked. His activities for the Halberstadt library , the donation of the Gospel (Cathedral Treasury No. 44) and some of the homilies ascribed to him are uncertain .
As far as we know today, Haymo did not write any of the theological works ascribed to him by Johannes Trithemius ( Patrologia Latina 116-18). Instead, the authors of these works are Haimo von Auxerre or anonymous.
Haymo von Halberstadt was buried in Werden monastery, where he had previously been abbot.
