history

Ebersbach Sanatorium (1909)
former homestead "Georgswalder Str. 11", called Hainbergwindmühle (1965)

The first documentary mention of the then still uninhabited Hainberg area took place in 1569 as "Schöpsenhaine". The plateau between the Spree and the Ritterbach served the shepherds of the Georgswalder Hof as a pasture.

In 1703 the first house was built on the Hainberg. In the course of the 18th century, the Zittau council had the corridors of the Ebersbach estate parceled out and settled. The first of these new houses were built near today's market square.

After the division of Ebersbach in 1839, the Haine was part of the Neuebersbach community and was expanded to become its center. In 1873 the cross-border railroad from Löbau to Ofen started running, and the Georgswalde-Ebersbach communal station was built on the western edge of the town in the Spree Valley . In 1877 the communities of Altebersbach and Neuebersbach reunited to form a community of Ebersbach.

A windmill was built in 1871 on the small hilltop rising above the grove to the west and existed until 1890. After the mill, the half-timbered house "Georgswalder Str. 11" was named as "Hainbergwindmühle", it no longer exists today.

In the last quarter of the 19th century, a building boom set in on the Haine due to its convenient location near the train station. In 1884 a Russian steam bath was set up in the Haine. With the grove school built in 1899 on the property of the steam bath, the district received its own school building. In the same year, a sanatorium with a spa was built on the hilltop on the south-western outskirts of the village - right on the Bohemian border.

Since the turn of the century, the development has extended to the entire east and south-east slopes of the Hainberg. Residential buildings surrounded by gardens and parks were built to the west and north-west of the station. Beyond the customs house, in Bohemian territory, three factories were built. Between 1929 and 1930, the district hospital was built in place of the sanatorium.

During the GDR era, the Ebersbach district hospital was expanded into a regional medical care center for the Oberland, to which five polyclinics in Ebersbach, Neugersdorf , Neusalza-Spremberg and Oppach as well as two outpatient departments in Eibau and Oberoderwitz were connected. Today it is one of the two locations of the Oberlausitzer Bergland Clinic.

In the GDR, the Hainschule was the polytechnic high school of the 2nd district in Ebersbach. Since 2003 it has been run by the private school association Schkola under the name "Schkola Oberland" as an independent primary and secondary school as well as a grammar school. With the city merger of Ebersbach with Neugersdorf to the city of Ebersbach-Neugersdorf in 2011 , Haine was deleted as a district.
