The Scheid is a peninsula on the north side of the Edersee .

Geographical location

The Scheid peninsula

It is located in the district of Nieder-Werbe , a district of the city of Waldeck in the north Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg , about 2.5 km south of the core town of Nieder-Werbe, from where the only road connection to the Scheid exists. The peninsula is located in the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park and was created in 1914, when the Eder valley was flooded with the completion of the Edertalsperre and the village (Alt) -Bringhausen in the valley below the Scheid with the bridge over the Eder im Water disappeared. The new village of Bringhausen is on the south bank of the lake west of the peninsula, the love islandwith the remains of the castle Bring to the southwest. A ferry leads to the peninsula from Rehbach , a village belonging to Hemfurth-Edersee on the opposite bank to the east .

The mountainous northern part is densely forested ( nature reserve "Kahle Haardt"), but crossed by numerous hiking trails . The southern part, on the other hand, is used intensively for tourism . There are restaurants , holiday apartments , several campsites , a bathing beach with a lawn and playground as well as a marked dog beach , several Nordic walking trails, boat moorings on the east and west banks, as well as a jetty for the Edersee passenger shipping , which has two passenger ships between the moorings Waldeck -West, Edertal-Sperrmauer, Scheid peninsula, Bringhausen, Asel and Herzhausen .

The development into a tourist destination began after the Second World War . The first settlement took place in 1920/21, when a group of ten former officers of the dissolved Imperial Navy founded the Edersee settlement company in Kiel and the Kassel association “Hessische Heimat” built ten houses for the retirees' settlement. In the course of time, guest rooms were offered in some of these houses, and in the 1950s the first guest houses were expanded into small restaurants and tents and campsites were set up.

Church in the green

In 1971, the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck (EKKW) built a tent-shaped wooden church on Scheid as part of its “ Kirche Unterwegs ” program for camping and holiday pastoral care, the so-called Church in the Green , which starts from Easter until the Thanksgiving Festival , now almost all year round Protestant church services as well as a cultural and children's program are offered. Weddings and baptisms are also celebrated there. As this building is nearing its limit of use due to its age, a new building, again made of wood, has been planned since 2014. A church service room with side rooms and galleries, which can also be used as a conference and event location, and a two-storey building to accommodate volunteers are to be built on a plot of land by the lawn by 2021 at the latest. The previous center will cease to operate after the 2020 season.
