Axel Hampus Dalström (born March 22, 1829 in Helsinki ; died March 19, 1882 there ) was a Finnish architect. In addition to his numerous lighthouse buildings, his work is particularly characterized by representative urban buildings in Helsinki, most of which no longer exist today. In his designs, Dalström made extensive use of round arches and elements of the Italian Renaissance .

Dalström studied architecture at the Technical Institute and the Royal Academy of Liberal Arts in Stockholm and finished his training with the Finnish building administration. In 1861/62 he went on a study trip to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

In the 1860s, Dalström designed numerous lighthouses in the Finnish archipelago and in Lake Ladoga for the Finnish building authorities . From 1869 to 1882 he was the head of the Finnish main office for public buildings ( Rakennushallitus ) and in this function designed numerous representative buildings in the contemporary style of neoclassicism and neo-renaissance . One of his most sensational works is the old student house in Helsinki, which was completed in 1870.

By virtue of his office, Dalström would also have been responsible for designing important government buildings such as the headquarters of the Central Bank of Finland. However, since his designs did not meet the client's expectations, the contract was ultimately awarded to architects outside the administration through an international tender.
