Hank Mizell (actually William M. Mizell , born November 9, 1923 in Daytona Beach , Florida , † December 23, 1992 in Murfreesboro , Tennessee ) was an American singer , guitarist and songwriter . He was known primarily for his Rockabilly - Single Jungle rock 1958, 18 years after its first publication, in 1976, gained an amazing popularity.

biography

After his military service in World War II , Mizell began a musical career as a singer. He got his nickname "Hank" after the country musician Hank Williams from a radio presenter.

When Jungle Rock was released on a local record label in 1958, it was not a commercial success. A new edition in 1959 on King Records was unsuccessful. In the early 1960s, Mizell gave up his music career and became a preacher for the Church of Christ . He was married and had four children.

In 1971 Jungle Rock appeared on the Dutch bootleg compilation Rock 'n' Roll, Vol. 1 (erroneously attributed to the guitarist and composer Jim Bobo at the time). This made the British record label Charly Records aware of the piece and it was re-released in March 1976, now also attributed to the right artist. The single reached number 3 in the UK and even reached number 1 on the music charts in the Netherlands . In Germany, the song came in at number 27.

Due to its surprising success, they looked for Mizell and finally found him in Murfreesboro , Tennessee . He came to Europe, promoted the song on the British TV show Top of the Pops and the Dutch branch Toppop and recorded new material for an LP. The album Jungle Rock was released in 1976. The former Elvis drummer DJ Fontana was hired as the drummer . A re-release was released on CD in 1999 by the German label Repertoire .

Hank Mizell died on December 23, 1992 in Murfreesboro , Tennessee , at the age of 69. His date of birth is considered controversial, 1924 and 1926 are also mentioned.

The song Jungle Rock was covered by Shakin 'Stevens & the Sunsets , the Tail Gators and The Fall , among others . A German version is by Frank Rothe & the Young Ones, the French version by Charles Jérôme is titled Dingue de rock .
