Hans-Dieter Scharf (born July 18, 1930 in Leipzig , † February 27, 1998 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German chemist. He was a member of the Belter group .

life and work

Hans-Dieter Scharf studied chemistry at the University of Leipzig and became a member of the youth opposition Belter group in Leipzig. He was arrested on October 6, 1950 and sentenced to ten years of forced labor on January 20, 1951 by a Soviet military tribunal (SMT) . This was followed by deportation to the Vorkuta labor camp north of the Arctic Circle. He was released to the GDR on December 28, 1953 and fled to West Berlin in January 1954 .

He continued studying chemistry at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . In 1960 he was honored with a thesis on the Ipatiev reaction doctorate . His doctoral supervisor was Friedhelm Korte . After completing his doctorate, he first worked in industrial research.

In 1966 he continued his research at the University of Bonn and completed his habilitation there in 1968. This was followed by a position as professor for physical-organic chemistry at the Technical University of Aachen . He turned down several offers from other universities and in 1972 was appointed full professor and director of the Institute for Organic Chemistry. The focus of research was photochemistry and the chiral induction in photochemical reactions, such as the Paternò-Büchi reaction . Scharf is considered the developer of the isoinversion principle .

Since April 16, 1993, he was a corresponding member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences .
