Hans-Erich von Schroeter

Hans-Erich Paul Sigismund von Schroeter (* 22. June 1891 in Pless ; † 19th June 1947 in Arnum ) was a German major general in World War II , which until July 25, 1944, the defense of the April 22, 1942 Wroclaw was responsible . He had to give up his command after the assassination attempt on July 20, 1944 .

Life

Hans-Erich was a son of Police President Heinrich von Schroeter and his wife Maria, née Walter. After graduating from high school, he joined the Prussian Army on January 7, 1909 and was promoted to lieutenant when he graduated from military school . He was used as a squadron officer in the 1st Leib-Hussar Regiment No. 1 and initially participated in the fighting on the Western Front after the beginning of World War I and from autumn 1914 on the Eastern Front . On December 18, 1915, Schroeter was promoted to first lieutenant and was awarded both classes of the Iron Cross during the war .

After the war he was accepted into the Reichswehr as a first lieutenant and in 1922 advanced to Rittmeister . Schroeter married Gerda von Meßling on September 26, 1922. In 1930 he was transferred to Frankfurt (Oder) , where he was promoted to major . When the Reichswehr was expanded to include the Wehrmacht , he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. In mid-August 1937 he became an adjutant at the General Command of the 1st Army Corps in Königsberg . On October 1, 1938, he was promoted to colonel , and on January 1, 1939, he was transferred to Vienna in the same position.

During the mobilization on the occasion of the Second World War, Schroeter was transferred to the Western Front in the summer of 1939. At the end of the spring of 1940 he led the 482 infantry regiment in the division unit in the western campaign . From September 1940 his regiment was used to occupy Poland . At the beginning of the summer of 1941 he led his infantry regiment in the eastern campaign during the attack on southern Russia. On December 24, 1941, he was awarded the German Cross in Gold. On January 1, 1942, he was promoted to major general and on April 22, 1942, he was appointed as the successor to Lieutenant General Friedrich von Amann as commandant of Breslau. After the events of the assassination attempt on July 20, 1944 , Adolf Hitler had to give up his command on July 25, 1944. He was arrested by order of Heinrich Himmler and Gauleiter Karl Hanke and taken to the Germersheim Fortress .
