The Hans Mandl Vocational School ( 3rd Central Vocational School of the City of Vienna , Längenfeldgasse Vocational School , in the past occasionally also Malfattigasse Textile Vocational School or just Malfattigasse Vocational School ) in Längenfeldgasse in Vienna's 12th district of Meidling was the largest school building in the Second Republic at the time of its construction.

Namesake

The name giver for the Third Central Vocational School in Vienna is the former teacher, district school inspector and state school inspector for vocational schools Hans Mandl, who was born in Szeged in 1899 and died in Vienna in 1970 . During his tenure as Vice Mayor and City Councilor for Culture of Vienna, the vocational school named after him in 1976 was built. A memorial plaque in the school yard at the main entrance also commemorates him.

school

The Third Central Vocational School in Vienna was built from December 1962 to summer 1965 according to plans by Adolf Ellinger, Hermann Kutschera and Alexander Letscheff. The opening took place on October 21, 1965.

On the 27,000 square meter property, delimited by Längenfeldgasse, Steinbauergasse, Malfattigasse and the later so-called Duchweg, 5,600 square meters were originally built with a class and workshop wing (25 classrooms, 17 workshops, ancillary rooms), a hall wing with a ballroom and gym, the administration building and built into a wing with official apartments.

The school building, which cost around 90 million schillings, was planned as a vocational school for the textile professions, but also as a location for the ninth year girls' classes from the districts of Wieden , Margareten , Mariahilf , Meidling, Hietzing and Liesing (districts 4–6, 12, 13, 23) as well as for the textile school Sperrgasse. However, this moved out again in 1978 due to a lack of space and moved to Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus in Siebeneichengasse, where it is run as the technical school for fashion and clothing technology of the City of Vienna .

Extensions were added later. The first extension concerned the hotel and restaurant wing in 1975. In May 1994 the newly built wing for the vocational school for bakers and confectioners, which had moved here from the Mollardgasse vocational school, was opened, followed in 1997 by the wing in which the Meidling Adult Education Center and the Meidling District Museum are located.
