Ulrich Scheske

Hans Ulrich Scheske (born March 21, 1915 in Berlin ; † October 3, 1994 in Dornbirn ) was a German diplomat who was ambassador to Thailand between 1967 and 1971 and ambassador to Pakistan from 1973 to 1979 .

Life

After graduating from high school, Scheske began studying at the Reformrealgymnasium Tempelhof in 1933 and in 1933 also joined the Schutzstaffel under membership number 216977. After completing his studies and doctorate , he was a government trainee. After 1942 he headed the "State Security" subdivision in the Luftwaffe Research Office , an intelligence service of the Third Reich. In February 1945 he was awarded the honorary sheet clasp of the Army and Waffen SS .

After the establishment of the Federal Republic of Germany, Scheske entered the higher-level foreign service and found employment at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Bonn and at various missions abroad. In 1963, as a lecturer in the first class of the Legation Council , he was head of the NATO, WEU (Military Affairs) and Defense Department in the Political Department West 2 in the Foreign Office.

On April 6, 1967, Scheske was appointed ambassador to Thailand as the successor to Hans-Ulrich von Schweinitz and took up this position on July 31, 1967. In this function he was temporarily appointed head of the German embassy in June 1968 after the head of the embassy in Saigon, Baron Hasso Rüdt von Collenberg , was shot in the street by members of the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War South Vietnam and was in mortal danger, but was saved by Ulrich Brinkhoff , who was awarded the Federal Medal of Merit. He held the post of ambassador to Thailand until 1971.

After a renewed assignment in the Foreign Office, Scheske succeeded Norbert Berger as ambassador to Pakistan in 1973 . Together with his military attaché, he tried to appease the demonstrators in front of the US embassy during the hostage-taking of Tehran, at risk of death. He held this office of ambassador until he retired in 1980 and was then replaced by Klaus Terfloth .
