Norbert Berger (diplomat)

Norbert Berger (born March 22, 1913 in Berlin , † October 14, 1998 in Bonn ) was a German diplomat . Among other things, he was ambassador to Pakistan from 1970 to 1973 and to Peru from 1973 to 1978 .

Life

After graduating from high school , Berger studied law and from 1938 to 1939 was on a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to study abroad in Santiago de Chile . When the Second World War broke out , he settled in Lima and lived there for two years.

After the Second World War, he entered the foreign service and, after completing his career test, was consul in Bilbao in 1954 and then from 1956 to 1959 counselor at the embassy in Spain . He then became Head of the Consulate General in Salisbury as Legation Counselor First Class .

After further assignments to foreign missions , Berger , who is close to the CDU , became head of subdivision B of the department for trade and development policy at the Foreign Office in Bonn as ministerial director.

On January 29, 1970 he was appointed to succeed Günther Scholl as ambassador to Pakistan . During his tenure in 1970, the foundation stone for today's embassy building in Islamabad , which was inaugurated in 1972, took place under the supervision of the Federal Building Department .

He then became ambassador to Peru in 1973 , where he succeeded Robert von Förster , while Ulrich Scheske became the new ambassador to Pakistan. In 1978 he retired and was replaced by Hans Werner Loeck as ambassador to Peru.

After his retirement he became involved in the Ibero Club Bonn, an association to promote relations between Germany and Spain and Latin American countries, and was its president from March 15, 1984 to July 13, 1987.
