societies

Gruber played as a middle runner in the then "offensive system" in midfield for the "red blouses" from the south of Duisburg, the Duisburg SpV . In the club of the 1st chairman Gottfried Hinze (from 1905 to 1925 also president of the DFB) Gruber was a long-time captain and an indispensable figure. He won the West German championship three times with the DSV in 1924, 1925 and 1927. He took part with his club in the final round of the German soccer championship . He made his debut in the finals on May 25, 1924 in Fürth in the game against 1. FC Nürnberg at the side of teammates Leo Fiederer and August Sackenheim . The "club" prevailed with 3: 1 goals.

In the finals in 1925 he and his team prevailed in the first two rounds against Berlin FC Alemannia 1890 (2: 1) and Altona 93 (2: 0) with Adolf Jäger . In the semifinals on May 24th, in front of 35,000 spectators in the Wedau stadium at home , the hurdle for 1. FC Nürnberg in the 3-0 defeat was again too high. In the years 1926 and 1927 there were further final round matches against Hamburger SV (1: 3) and Kickers 1900 Berlin (4: 5 a.s.). Overall, Gruber was listed in the statistics with six finals between 1924 and 1927 for the German soccer championship.

Selection / national team

As a player in the selection team of the West German Game Association , he was used in the competition for the national cup . On October 9, 1927, he stood out in his native Duisburg in a 4: 3 victory over the selection team of the South German Football Association , as well as in the semifinals against the selection team of the North German Football Association . The first game against the north took place on January 8, 1928 in Hamburg and ended 4: 4 after extra time. A month later they split 2-2 in Duisburg, again after extra time. The third game on April 1st brought Northern Germany to Altona with a 2-1 home win after extra time. In all four games of the competition Gruber had filled the middle runner position and was supported by Hermann Flick and Konrad Heidkamp .

Before the Olympic football tournament in Amsterdam in 1928 , he was used in two test matches in the team of Reich trainer Otto Nerz . In addition to Heidkamp, Hans Kalb , Ludwig Leinberger , Georg Knöpfle and Ernst Nagelschmitz, he was a member of the DFB squad for the Olympic tournament. In the two games, which were won 4-0 against Switzerland on May 28 and June 3 and lost 4-1 against Uruguay, he was not used.

On June 1, 1929, he made his debut in the senior national team , which played in Berlin 1: 1 draw against the national team of Scotland . It was his only 90 minutes as a national player because he was unable to assert himself against the competition, in the person of Kalb and Leinberger.

Others

Professionally, Gruber found his livelihood as a bank clerk and after his playing career he also worked as a gaming committee chairman for years. The DSV was one of the predecessor clubs of Eintracht Duisburg .
